In a major step towards attracting global talent, Germany has launched a new Freelance Visa, opening doors for skilled professionals from non-EU countries to live and work independently in one of Europe’s most advanced economies. This initiative is ideal for freelancers, remote workers, and self-employed individuals looking to establish their careers in Europe.

Who is Eligible?

The German Freelance Visa is designed specifically for citizens outside the European Union, including professionals from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other non-EU countries.

According to Section 18 of the German Income Tax Act, the following professions are eligible:

  • Scientists, teachers, and educators
  • Artists, journalists, translators, and photojournalists
  • Engineers, architects, lawyers
  • Doctors, therapists, and healthcare professionals
  • Accountants, tax consultants
  • Other certified self-employed specialists

Visa Duration & Residency Pathway

  • Initially granted for 1 year.
  • Can be extended up to 3 years if conditions are met
  • After 5 years of continuous residence, language proficiency, and financial stability, applicants can apply for permanent residency.

Required Documents

To apply for the German Freelance Visa, you will need the following documents:

  • A valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages)
  • Completed and signed the visa application form
  • Detailed work plan (type of freelance work, client information, contracts or letters of intent)
  • Proof of income planning and available capital
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Verified educational certificates and work references
  • Proof of business ties in Germany or Europe (e.g., client contracts, rental agreement)
  • Proof of financial support for at least one year
  • Valid health insurance
  • For applicants over 45: proof of retirement provision (e.g., pension plan or assets)
  • Recent passport-sized photo
  • Visa fee: €75 (approx. PKR 2,800)

How to Apply

  1. Fill out the national “D” visa form.
  2. Schedule an appointment at your local German embassy or consulate.
  3. Submit all documents on the appointment date.
  4. Provide biometric data
  5. You’ll receive a temporary visa (3–6 months).
  6. After arriving in Germany, register your address within 2 weeks.
  7. Visit the immigration office to obtain your residence permit for freelance work.

  • Approval depends on your profession, financial condition, and demand for your services in Germany.
  • A basic understanding of the German language and having health insurance can significantly improve your chances.
  • You must prove that you can generate legal, stable income while living in Germany.
